Beware of EBT Scam Texts

EBT SCAM

A recent EBT scam is targeting individuals who receive food benefits (EBT), and it’s important to be aware.

Users are receiving text messages that claim their food benefits are temporarily suspended. The message urges recipients to call a number—(888)-616-6635—where an automated machine asks for sensitive information such as their EBT card number and PIN.

This is a scam, and it’s crucial to never provide personal details like your EBT number or PIN over the phone, especially when prompted by unsolicited messages.

EBT Scam

Here’s how the scam works:

The Text Message: You receive a message claiming your food benefits are suspended or under review.
The Call: The message provides a phone number to call—888-616-6635.
The Automated System: Once you call, an automated system prompts you to enter your EBT card number and PIN. After entering the number, they claim that your card has been activated again.

What they’re trying to do:

This information gives the scammers direct access to your food benefits and potentially your bank account. Once they have your EBT card details, they can drain your funds or sell the information on the dark web.

What should you do if you receive this message?
– Do not call the number or enter any personal information.
– Do not share your EBT card number or PIN with anyone over the phone, even if they claim to be from an official agency.
– Report the scam: Contact your EBT provider immediately to report any suspicious activity and verify the status of your benefits.
– Block the number: If possible, block the number that sent the text and any numbers associated with it.

Protect yourself:
Be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages or phone calls, especially those requesting personal information.

Always verify any message or phone call by contacting your benefits provider directly using the official number from their website or your account documentation.

Stay vigilant, and if something seems suspicious, it’s always better to verify before taking any action. Keep your information secure and report any potential scams to the proper authorities.

And most importantly, spread the message about EBT Scam and warn others!
